Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera Look familiar? That's Fujifilm's latest X-series camera, the X-S1, which launched as the XS-1 in the UK for £699 ($1090) in November. Now the company has moved the dash one character to the left and priced the DSLR-like superzoom at $799.95, with a late-January ship date. Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera We were expecting something slightly different after images of a rumored X cam appeared earlier this week, but this is all we're getting at the high-end -- for now, at least. The X-S1 includes a fixed 26x manual zoom lens with a range of 24-624mm and a variable maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.6, with a 2/3-inch 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor behind -- the same size found on the rangefinder-like X10. Fujifilm X-S1 Digital CameraThe lens is quite versatile, allowing you to capture subjects both far away and incredibly close -- it can focus on objects as near as 1 centimeter from the lens in Super Macro Mode. Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera On the rear, you'll find both a 1.4-million-dot, 0.47-inch EVF and a 3-inch 460k-dot tilting LCD -- a heads-up sensor automatically switches to the EVF as you get near.Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera
Sports shooters will appreciate the seven-frames-per-second high-speed mode at full resolution, or 10 fps at six megapixels. Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera And as you'll expect with any high-end cam, there's 1080/30p video capture on board with stereo sound and H.264 encoding, along with RAW stills and full manual control, with a dedicated mode dial up top. Unfortunately, due to the camera's smaller image sensor, ISO sensitivity isn't on-par with larger DSLRs -- the native range extends from ISO 100 to 3,200, though you can jump up to ISO 12,800 when shooting "small" resolution JPEGs (which you aren't likely to do). We're holding out hope that Fuji's rumored cam will make a surprise appearance at the company's CES press conference, but for now, this will have to do. Full details are in the PR just past the break
Along with a whopping 18 other digital camera announcements, Fujifilm has begun the Pre-CES blitz by adding a high-end 26x megazoom camera to its much-buzzed-about X series, which includes the Fujifilm FinePix X100 and X10. Though the new X-S1 doesn’t have the same retro hipster design appeal as the X100 and X10, it does share the X10’s 12-megapixel, 2/3-inch EXR CMOS sensor, which is significantly larger than any other megazoom currently on the market (including the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150/Leica V-Lux 3).
Fujifilm X-S1 Digital Camera It’s not the first Fujifilm megazoom to sport such a large sensor, though: The well-regarded Fujifilm FinePix S100fs from 2008 also had a 2/3-inch sensor (though it was an 11-megapixel CCD), but it was eventually replaced by the Fujfilm FinePix S200EXR, which dropped the sensor down to a 12-megapixel 1/1.6-inch Super CCD EXR.
With the X-S1, though, Fujifilm is trying to capitalize on some X-factor allure by associating it with the X100 and X10, and has added a pricetag to match: At $799.95, it’s the highest-priced megazoom out there and significantly higher in price than the earlier large-sensor megazooms from Fujifilm. For that hefty price, you’ll get a wide-angle 26x manual zoom lens (24-624mm equivalent, f/2.8-5.6); super macro capabilities (focus as close as 1cm); 7fps burst-mode shooting (10fps at 6 megapixel resolution); 0.01-second shutter lag; a 0.47-inch, 1.4 million-dot EVF; a 3-inch, 460,000-dot tilting LCD; a heads-up sensor to automatically switch between the EVF and LCD, and more. You’ll also get a pretty hefty camera–the X-S1 weighs in at a beefy 33.3 oz and measures 5.3×4.2×5.9 inches. Compare that to a Canon EOS Rebel T3i, which weighs in at about 25.7 ounces with the 18-55mm kit lens and measures about 5.2×3.9×3.1 inches sans lens, and you’ll get an idea of what kind of heft we’re talking about. Still, you do get the flexibility of a 24-624mm zoom, and while there are other 26x and longer megazooms, none will likely match the image quality.
You see what Fujifilm did here, right? They've added an in-between camera to their high-end X series, right between the fun X10 and the serious X100. The X-S1 Digital Camera (Black) looks like a DSLR, but has a fixed 26x 24-624mm lens with a very fast (for this zoom range) f/2.8 maximum aperture at the wide-angle end of the zoom (it goes to f/5.6 at longer focal lengths). That's a 26x zoom lens. A true wide-angle 24mm to a truly awesome 624mm telephoto and everything in between. Plus, a super macro setting that allows you to get your shot right up to 1/2" from your subject--there's hardly a photo you can't capture with this camera.
The 2/3" EXR CMOS sensor captures both high res stills and 1080p HD video at a maximum resolution of 12MP. The X-S1 has both a large, tiltable 3" LCD monitor and a sharp 1440,000-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF). Naturally, it captures RAW as well as JPEG files. Sensitivity from ISO 100 to ISO 12800 gives you confidence that you'll always get the shot, no matter how dim the light.

The solid construction of the X-S1 include touches like metal dials on top, a textured rubber-like finish for a solid grip, and the ability to use the built-in flash for macro shots as close as 11.8". The overall structure is designed to minimize moisture and dust.
The film simulation mode allows you to mimic the look of Velvia, Provia or Astia Fuji films, or produce gorgeous black and white images with or without filtration. You can even bracket dynamic range, film simulation, exposure or ISO sensitivity for any given situation. This camera is ready to play.
F2.8-5.6 Fujinon 6.1-158.6mm Optical 26x Zoom Lens (24-624mm Equivalent)
Extensive Focal Length Range (24mm-624mm) and Bright F-Values (F2.8-F5.6)
Featuring a 12-group, 17-element lens configuration, the manual optical 26x zoom is a masterpiece of FUJINON technology. The extravagant adoption of high optical performance glass lens elements (aspherical, high refractive index, and ED glass lenses) make the exceptional brightness of F2.8 at wide angle and F5.6 at telephoto possible.
4 Aspherical Lenses
By using 4 high-performance aspherical lenses, the X-S1 delivers sharp image quality with rich resolution. These lenses also contribute to a more compact overall lens configuration and the X-S1's compact body size ensuring you can easily take it everywhere with you.
ED Lens
ED lenses are included for prevention of chromatic aberrations and muddy colors. In order to minimize chromatic aberration which tends to occur when taking telephoto shots with a long zoom lens, two ED lenses made of extra-low dispersion glass have been adopted in the lens configuration. Adoption of one large-diameter ED lens in the first lens group reduces axial chromatic aberration that can occur at high zoom settings.
Super EBC
All the lens elements used in the X-S1 have been treated with multilayer Super EBC (Electron Beam Coating), the same process used for Fujinon broadcasting video lenses and large-format camera lenses acclaimed by professionals. Reducing ghosting and lens flare, the treatment promises clear image quality.
Versatile Shooting Style
Optimized for exquisite detail all the way to the edge of the image--the FUJINON Lens and the EXR CMOS Sensor are the cutting edge of original FUJIFILM high-performance technology. These key devices have not only been adopted in the new X-S1, but also thoroughly optimized for each other, resulting in a synergy that produces high-resolution photos with exceptional resolution from the center to the edge of the image with extremely few aberrations.
